Over the past couple of months, I’ve had the opportunity as a part of my duties at RPM Magazine to spend some time behind the wheel of the newest versions of the Chevy Camaro SS, Ford Mustang GT and Dodge Challenger SRT8. Yes, I think I might have been the envy of my neighbours that curiously have been dropping by more frequently than normal. Oh well, probably just a coincidence. After finishing testing the last car, I got to thinking whether I preferred the models of 40 years ago or the ones of today.
The correct answer, I guess, would be today’s versions as they not only look great, but come with more horsepower, handle incredibly, have a superior finish and of course are theoretically more reliable than the stock units of the past. But I’m not convinced that completely tilts the scales in the latest versions’ favour.
For me, there is still something special about muscle cars from the late ‘60s and early ‘70s that just can’t be replicated, nor bettered. These cars have character and style but most of all a hint of nastiness that draws the attention of the non-enthusiasts. Let’s face it, everyone at some point is pulled into the dark side and whether they like to admit it or not, they like it. That is what that era represents to me.
So, my conclusion is you can’t compare the two. I know it’s a fence-sitting position, but it’s the truth. If pushed, though, I have to say I have noticed that I do have a little bit of a devilish grin every time I cruise around in the Chevelle!
