Dave Warren has two favourite cars. They are a 1962 Belair and a 1965 GTO Tri-Power four-speed convertible...turquoise on turquoise. After racing a 1962 Belair with 1,400 hp for four years in the Doorslammer series, he decided to find his dream car. That was six years ago and he was informed on just what to look for in a 1965 GTO. He had restored two previously, one for himself and one for a customer of his Blue Max Automotive, and was now looking for the perfect car to restore for himself.

It was no small task looking for a 1965 Turquoise GTO with original running gear that was not too rusty. Some rust-free cars are available and generally they are south of the border, as the 1965 GTO model was not sold new in Canada. Warren took his role as a Tiger Hunter seriously, and hunted all over the internet for his car.

As almost the whole free world knows, the first generally accepted muscle car was the Pontiac GTO of 1964. Many previous models of full-sized cars were available with optional big-horsepower mills, but the GTO package was the first to grab the youth of America and whip them into a frenzy - one quarter-mile at a time.

Like a lot of legends, it got off to a rocky start. Hot Rod Magazine tested a four-barrel two-speed Powerglide transmission model and proclaimed the GTO a “slug.” The famous Jim Wangers of Pontiac Public Relations demanded that John Delorean, Pontiac’s Chief Engineer, personally pick the cars to be tested by magazines. At this time, American cars were pretty much the only game in town except for the British cars and a smattering of German and Italian cars. Most import cars came into North America as small under-powered sedans or sports cars or high-dollar under-powered luxury sedans or sports jobs.

The name GTO was meant to poke fun at Ferrari and his GTO that was not going to have enough cars made to officially become homologated for racing. Basically “homologated for racing” means enough cars are produced to be classed as production cars and not specially-built race cars. GT is short for the Italian words Gran Turismo (Grand Touring is generally referring to more luxurious sporting cars…windows and heaters back in the day) and the “O” is for Omologato, Italian for homologated.

Car and Driver Magazine was trying a new marketing trick for its new name (formerly Sports Car Illustrated) and thought it should compare the Ferrari GTO and the Pontiac GTO. The Ferrari GTO (Ferrari North America was not providing any test mules) and the Pontiac GTO never happened to be at any one track at the same time. A great watercolour illustration of the Ferrari leading the Pontiac on a road course apparently at speed was used on the cover and the magazine was judged by that, and many people forgot to read that the two cars were never together on the track.

The story is further muddied by the GTO showing up with a 421 cu.in. tri-power engine instead of a 389, and it was completely worked over by one of the Pontiac dealerships, Royal Pontiac. The results do not matter, but the Pontiac came out triumphant and they sold a huge number of GTOs and Ferrari never quite made enough GTOs to be homogolated….but they kept the name.

The story states that “the Pontiac will beat the Ferrari in a drag race, and the Ferrari will go around any American road circuit faster than the stock GTO.” But it then goes on to state that the test car (no reference to any stock Pontiac GTO) would lap any track in America faster than any “Ferrari street machine.” I am pretty sure that if they had apples and oranges available to them, they would say comparing these two fruits is as unfair as comparing a Ferrari race car to a Pontiac street car, however much it was “tweaked”.

Speaking of oranges, many years later, Warren found his turquoise dream car in Florida, but she had been painted black with the interior also sprayed black. Copious e-mails and photos traded back and forth and Warren went to look at this beauty. The car was transported home and was a wonderful driving car but after only a week on the road, restoration began.

The car was sold new in Georgia, just north of the Florida border, and moved south when it was a couple of years old. Warren bought the car off a fellow who had owned it since 1975, and it had 110,000 miles on the odometer. The car had not been driven since 1982 and was virtually rust-free. Warren completely refinished the GTO to its original glory and all major components were rebuilt.

The first owner or the selling dealership had ticked off the GTO package (#382) to add $295.90 to the base Le Mans convertible, Model 23767, priced at $2,797 with the power operated top. The magic paint code “K” was checked as was the 4-speed transmission for $188.30 (77w) and the Tri-Power carburetor set-up for $115.78 (ws). One of the selected options seems so unusual that it merits special note; option #395 is for the AM/FM Radio with the rear-mounted electrically operated antenna. Unusual in that FM radio was rare before the 1970s, and the placing of the antenna in the rear instead of the front right fender was a $162.88 option, only $16 less than the 4-speed transmission and almost $50 more that the Tri-Power option.

The GTO package consisted of the four-barrel, 389 cubic-inch V8 engine, dual exhausts, 3-speed synchromesh floor shift standard transmission, sports type springs and shocks, special seven-blade fan and fan clutch, 775x14 Red Line or WSW tires, chrome air cleaner cover, chrome rocker covers and, of course, GTO badges.

Not available as a factory option is the very rare 1965 Ram Air induction system and the Hurst package including Hurst badges and Hurst wheels. Both were offered as an over-the-counter option to be installed by the owner or the dealership. Warren had the wheels for a long time and had Panther restore them, and notes that most of the cars advertised by Pontiac in 1965 had the optional Hurst badging and wheels.

Now that his dream car is finished, he plans to go to the largest GTO show around, the Tiger Run in Oregon in late May, and continue his tenth year of racing the bubbletop Chevy…and to restore his newly acquired one-owner 1965 GTO two-door hardtop with under 60,000 miles and a 4-speed. Here is one Tiger Hunter not ready for retirement!

Project Stress Relief is a Buick Regal that we have been working on for a few years now (be quiet, you know who you are). Why is it Project Stress Relief? Well, working on cars soothes me, it calms me down and relaxes me. Running two businesses, I am stuck behind the desk and on the phone all day and I no longer get to work on cars as much as I used to or would like to. So this is my stress relief; it’s one of those cars that, just when it’s finished, it’s time to change it.

Over the next 6-8 issues we will be taking our readers step-by-step into how to build, assemble and install a frame into an existing vehicle. We will walk you through having the frame sandblasted and powder coated, mocking up all of the suspension, steering and braking components as well as things like fuel and brake line plumbing. We will show you how to do all of this using basic mechanics’ tools and that it is something that you can do at home in your garage.

Since we are going to go through this step-by-step, we are going to need a motor and transmission on the frame to install as well, because I am not going to go through all of this work with a V6.

We decided that we wanted to show people how you can build something that is fuel injected without spending a lot of money, get great fuel economy, as well as get great performance out of it. You can spend the money to make it look good, like we did, but everything we added to the motor is simply for the eye candy factor.

We decided on using a Chevy TPI (Tuned Port Injection) motor in the Regal.

Here is a basic rundown of the TPI’s life and history and things you need to know when looking for a TPI system. There are two types of systems; there is the MAF (Mass Air Flow) system and what’s called the Speed Density system. Now, the TPI guys have debated which one is better ever since the system arrived in 1985 on the Camaro IROC-Z with 215 hp as a 305 and made it all the way up to 250 hp on the 350 in 1991 on both Camaros and Corvettes.

The two big differences between them and the reason one way or another that most people decide which style to use is that with a MAF system, you need to have some type of intake system between the throttle body and the air cleaner. Somewhere on this intake system, the MAF has to be installed inline with it. The Speed Density system allows you to bolt on a RC-5000 or RC-5050 K&N filter right to the end of the throttle body.

One more bit of important information is, there are two different styles of TPI intake mounts. The ‘85/’86 intakes bolt up to any old small-block, while the ‘87-’91 will bolt up to the newer vortec-style cylinder heads. So this gives you some options when it comes to what TPI to use if you have an existing motor already.

We started looking for a motor that was a solid foundation from which to start. A few years ago, my mechanic father put a 290-hp 350 GM Goodwrench motor in his friend’s van. Several years later, the van had literally rotted away but the motor was still intact. We picked up the entire van for $500. It turned out that even though the van looked like hell, it had sat up north and rusted away but the motor only had about 5,000 km on it. We got the motor, a TH350 and a big 4-core radiator (might use it someday) and sold the van for $200. So we were into this so far for $300.

We then fired up the internet and started looking on eBay and Craigslist for a used TPI setup that we could get. We found a complete Speed Density system with ECU and Harness for $200 on eBay. We took the entire unit apart, cleaned all the fuel rails out, took the fuel pressure regulator apart and cleaned all the sensors. Once we knew we had all good working parts, we turned our attention to making it look good as well. We started assembling everything. We took the harness apart and removed the entire vehicle’s wiring so that we had a standalone engine harness.

The great thing about the TPI motors is there are a ton of books and internet sites dedicated to installing these motors into everything including Jaguars.

The TPI requires an electric fuel pump and a tank with a baffle inside of it so that it doesn’t lose fuel when going around corners. We got a tank/pump/sender set up out of an ‘87 Buick Grand National off Craigslist for $500. Since the car had the computer-controlled carburetor on it, it already had a heavy fuel line and return line which saved us some money, but we priced it out and it would have cost us about $75 to run our own new return line if we had to.

We replaced the water temp sensor, the air intake sensor, MAP sensor, and fuel pressure regulator for just over $300, and a set of replacement injectors cost $200. So you’re looking at a total of $1,575. Now, can everyone find these deals? Sure, you just have to put in the time to look for them. You’re not going to be able to log onto the internet and find deals like this in one night. I spent a few months sourcing out all of these parts.

Now, because we were putting this motor into a show car, we wanted to go with some new items, for dress-up and performance.

We turned to Pertronix for all the ignition products like their Flame Thrower Distributor, Flame Thrower E-Core Coil and Flame Thrower 8mm custom-fit MAGX 2 Spark Plug wires. The Flame-Thrower HEI distributor produces 67 percent more energy with a 45 percent faster spark breakdown time when compared to the stock HEI. This means twice the energy to the spark plugs. The Flame-Thrower E-Core coils feature optimized winding design to maximize spark gap current and have available 50,000 volts. When teamed with Flame-Thrower ignition modules, they produce 100 percent more energy across the spark plug gap (during a one millisecond burn time) compared to the OEM coil.

We removed the stock rockers from the GM heads and replaced them with PRW rockers and pushrods. PRW’s rockers are lightweight and made from 15-5ph stainless steel. They are designed to give plenty of clearance for large diameter springs.

We used JBA Performance Exhaust shorty headers because they use all mandrel-bent stainless steel primary tubes with 3/8-inch-thick laser-cut flanges. They use oversized ports, extra thick collector domes and Silver Ceramic Coating on all of their headers. They also come with a factory-style emission connection (O2 Sensor) already welded into them which makes them a perfect fit for our TPI motor.

We wanted to get more performance out of the TPI system, so we contacted our friends at Painless Performance and got one of the PERFECT EFI wiring harness systems. The wiring harness is a standalone TPI wiring harness, but it also comes with their own ECU which is totally programmable with their laptop programmable PERFECT Cal Tool software.

Once we had it wired, we added a billet serpentine system for our Borgeson Power Steering pump and our electric water pump. We finished it all up with some miscellaneous small details like the stainless socket head fasteners, billet breathers and chrome fuel pressure gauge. We then started to take everything apart and start cleaning, sanding and spending a crazy amount of detail work on everything to make it look good. We smoothed out the block, heads and all of the TPI components with several hundreds of dollars of abrasives and primer to get the final look we wanted.

The final product is a very clean and subtle look for our motor. Now can you do all of this with the stock HEI distributor system, water pump and alternator? Yes, you just need to spend the time to clean it and detail it how you want it to look.

Next time, we will start with our “spare” frame that we have by boxing in the “U” channel sections of the frame and getting it sand blasted and powder coated.

It’s no secret that the last year and a half has been hard on the automotive industry. From the bankruptcies of the massive corporations such as Chrysler and GM, to local aftermarket companies shutting their doors for good, the entire industry got a wake-up call.

So, what’s that say about a company that not only survived the recession, but actually grew? Recessions are a good thing for the consumer; it weeds out the wannabes while allowing the good businesses, those with a passion for what they do and a good business sense to survive, to prosper and give the consumer quality service and product.

One such company is 360 Fabrication, based in Abbotsford, British Columbia. During the recession, 360 wasn’t cutting back; quite the opposite, they were building their business, adding more divisions to the company to give the hot rodder or custom car owner an all-in-one shop. Not only is 360 Fabrications the biggest builder in Western Canada, but they are growing, and constantly expanding by adding new services, staff and floor space.

360 Fabrication is already a well-known and trusted fabrication shop, collision service, and full custom glass shop. The fabrication shop has churned out some of Canada’s most popular hot rods and customs, while the collision and glass shops have earned the highest authority possible.

360’s latest ventures take them into the field of custom upholstery, and audio. They moved into the upholstery business out of necessity more than anything, as work they had farmed out was not coming back to the 360 standard. And so, a new division of 360 was born. Bringing in the expertise of Amy, the shop now has full creative and production control over all interiors that get put into all their cars. The new upholstery service has been so successful, 360 regularly has customers pulling cars into the shop from all over Western Canada.

Likewise, with the audio portion. If you are going to build the car of your dreams, you might as well put a kicking sound system in for those long cruises. The big audio installers just weren’t getting it done, and the risk of damage to expensive upholstery and paint meant another new in-house venture. With access to all the top names and brands, 360 can now finish off that custom with a sound that matches the quality of the car.

To house all these extra services, 360 has been slowly taking over the entire industrial complex that they are based in. Walking from one shop to another, you feel as though you’re entering another section of a very long ship. Everything has its place, and dedicated specialists can go to work, not worrying about another part of the shop. Now that they have everything in house, 360 has an advantage that no other shop can boast of. They can design, build and finish any vehicle a customer can dream up.

While all the different divisions are located in the same building, that also means that 360 can get your car out the door and on the road sooner and at a reduced price, a huge bonus to customers. With this also comes peace of mind to the customer, as the 360 crew knows how special that custom is to the owner. Your custom will be worked right beside several other high-priced customs owned by people with the same demands for a quality installation. So, you can trust that the bodywork, glass, upholstery and audio system will be done right, and not left in the care of a tech centre that tries to push product out the door.

With their newfound resources and space, you can be assured that the big projects are coming in. All are top secret at the moment, but expect some special vehicles to be coming out of 360 Fabrication’s doors in the very near future.

If you would like to contact the crew at 360, visit them at www.360fabrication.com or give them a call at 604-859-3608. If you want to see them in person, or try to get a glimpse at one of the secret projects, you can find them at #105-31234 Wheel Ave., Abbotsford, British Columbia.

Technology is near the top of the list as it touches us in everything we do in life on a daily basis...including the vehicles we drive. The pace at which we live is also up there. If you compare it to the simple life of our youth most were accustomed to, it is no wonder we aren’t all in straight jackets! But two things I’ve recently been involved with really got me thinking.

The first is how property prices in B.C. have remained so strong when the rest of the country’s housing markets have taken a major hit coinciding with the global economic downturn. But what’s been going on in this province is hard to figure out. I’ve been in the B.C. real estate market for over twenty five years and for the most part, the prices have been somewhat predictable. After going through my recent experience, you would think that we were still in the frenzy of 2005 when houses were selling as fast you could put the sign in the ground. I guess with the combination of uncertain interest rates and the looming Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), the price/panic level remains at a crazy pace with no end in sight.

The second is the continued growth and strength of the parts giant, Lordco Auto Parts.

In a time of uncertainty and when most are desperately trying just to hang on, owner Ed Coates and his team continue to expand at a torrid pace. The past five years, Coates has been expanding his empire by what feels like the opening of a new location each month. Not quite the case, but at the current rate they are going at, one would think the location count of 91 will reach the century mark within a very short period of time. Part of this success stems from their annual trade show. I’m sure many of you reading this article attended the show at the Pacific Coliseum and were equally blown away by the size and scope of this event. Like SEMA, this industry show features aftermarket companies from around the globe, but it doesn’t have the guys flicking cards into your face at Hastings and Renfrew when you leave. In the eleven years we’ve displayed there, we handed out the most magazines ever over the two days, which either means we are getting more popular or the show continues to grow.

We like to think it’s a little of both!

Petersen Lifetime Achievement Award. The ceremony took place during the grand opening breakfast of the 12th Annual Hot Rod & Restoration Trade Show in front of nearly one thousand attendees at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis.

“Being named a recipient of the Robert E. Petersen Lifetime Achievement Award is obviously a tremendous distinction and something completely unexpected,” Roush said. “I remember Robert (Petersen) always being a great ambassador for the auto industry and hot rods. It is an honour to be mentioned among the many legendary names who have received this award in the past.”

The Robert E. Petersen Lifetime Achievement Award has been presented annually since 2002. Previous recipients include Wally Parks (NHRA), Carroll Shelby, George Barris, Vic Edelbrock, the Ford family, Alex Xydias (So-Cal Speed Shop), and “Speedy” Bill Smith (Speedway Motors).

“We are very excited to have Jack Roush as the recipient of our 2010 Robert E. Petersen Lifetime Achievement Award. This is one of the most prestigious awards in our industry because it is only given to true pioneers like Jack, whose love of technology and the automobile has been a benefit to all of us who crave performance,” said Travis Weeks, group publisher, HotRod & Restoration magazine.
In addition to the highly-visible NASCAR entries of Roush Fenway Racing, Jack Roush also has a number of automotive-related companies in his hometown of Livonia, Mich. Among them is ROUSH® Industries, a Tier One supplier of engineering, testing and manufacturing services to all the “Big Three” manufacturers, and ROUSH Performance which produces high-performance vehicles, parts, and exotic crate engines. The crate engines can be highly customized per owner preference and are the choice of many hot rod and Cobra replicar builders such as Chip Foose, Roy Brizio, the RingBrothers and Superformance.

Roush has previously been inducted into the National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame (2010), the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame (2008), the International Motorsports Hall of Fame (2006), the Mustang Hall of Fame (2002), and the Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame (1992).

Earlier this year Roush also was one of five recipients of a coveted 2010 Distinguished Service Citation from the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn, Mich. This award recognizes an individual who has significantly improved the industry or their respective organization.

Roush’s numerous educational and philanthropic activities include establishment of the Jack Roush Motorsports Scholarship fund at Clemson University, which is dedicated to supporting graduate and undergraduate students in their pursuit of motorsports-related degrees.

It’s a guy thing………
Here’s a fun gift idea – if you don’t decide to keep it yourself! Ever wanted a throaty V8 sound but ‘social responsibility’ held you back? Ever wanted to hear that heavenly small-block symphony for hours on end but could not afford the invitable regular replacement tire bills? You and I both know that there’s nothing quite like the feeling of giving a highly tuned performance car a proper boot full. The screech of the tyres, the acceleration as it pushes you back into your seat - and the glorious, heart-stirring noise!

But tires and noise pollution tickets are expensive - and the prevailing attitude to road safety these days is that anything fun is to be punished in the harshest way possible - so the majority of cars are becoming quieter, more economical and generally less exciting to drive than ever before.
Well, here’s a gadget that turns your ‘responsible’ family hack into a small-block screamer – without any of the aforementioned disadvantages (well, in the driver’s mind anyway). It is called a Soundracer V8 and although I personally haven’t used it, it sounds like a whole mess of fun. It does a ‘Superman’ number on your car – changing it from the cardigan-clad Clark Kent to the guy in lycra wearing his undies on the outside!

The SoundRacer plugs into the cigarette lighter socket of your meek and mild family car, then sends an FM signal to your car stereo that makes your car sound like a roaring V8, faithfully matching revs and basically making the meekest of cars feel like a monster truck. So you can enjoy the ribald hoon factor from the driver’s seat without looking or sounding like a ‘gearhead’ to passers-by or the local constabulary. Sample videos of the device being used in different cars all over the world are available on the web at: http://www.soundracer.se/

Here’s some details from the maker’s website:

SoundRacer has developed a special technology to sense and calculate the car’s engine rpm and produce the sounds of a powerful Super Sports Car engine. The sound changes as you drive and SoundRacer even increases the speed of the engine sound so that you can drive at a normal speed and still get a very exciting engine sound.

SoundRacer detects the small signals from the alternator on the 12V system in the car; it does not use ignition pulses. That is why it also works on diesel cars. Manual or automatic transmission makes no differense for SoundRacer; it works on both types but, of course, the rpm response is different on automatic transmission cars with hydraulic torque converters, because the rpm increases as soon as you press the gas pedal.

A built-in FM transmitter transfers the sounds on a selectable frequency to the car stereo system.

It also works as a standard car FM-transmitter for MP3 players, such as iPod and iPhone, with a line-in socket that provides an input for playing music on the car stereo. A cable with 2 x 3.5 mm stereo plugs are supplied in the box. As soon as you plug in the cable in the line-in socket on SoundRacer, the engine sound is disconnected. The other end of the cable you just plug into the headphone socket on your music player and then the music is heard in the car speakers.

Check it out. Just think – ‘Mom’s Taxi’ could become ‘Mom’s ZR1.’ According to the website, it is available in 22 countries – including Canada. More information on the Soundracer website: http://www.soundracer.se/.

B & N Hotrod & Fabrication

“Let’s Get Hammered.” Now that statement conjures up all kinds of ideas, especially when it comes to Hot Rods and Hot Rodders. In simple terms, hammering a Coupe or Sedan has nothing to do with drinking, but instead refers to the fact that while gas welding, the welder will reach for his hammer and dolly, and while the metal and the weld are still red hot, he will then attempt to work the weld and surrounding area of the metal to shape and finish his work. On the other hand, wire feed welding makes the metal so hard there’s no chance of using a hammer and dolly, so you may as well reach for the grinder to shape things. Pushing on, we will show some of the welds in photos and the steps it takes to bring this Coupe back together!

THE COMPANY LINE

Background: Ewald and Kurt have been at the helm at Jellybean since its beginnings six years ago as a family-run hot rod shop. The company survived the recession by staying true to its vision of building high-quality automobiles, and is now aiming its sights into the stratosphere to become one of the great car builders in North America. Examples of their work have finished on the podium at events such as the Peking-to-Paris Rally, Grand National Roadster Show and Pebble Beach. This year, Jellybean’s goal is to be well represented in all the top events, be it vintage motorsport, Hot Rod shows, Custom shows or Concours events. 2010 will also be the fifth year of the company’s Canada Day Show and Cruise event held at the shop. We sat down with Ewald to get the latest from Jellybean.

PP: So, Ewald, it’s been a year since we’ve spoken with you; what’s the latest at Jellybean?

EP: One of our big changes is going from calling ourselves Jellybean Hot Rods to Jellybean AutoCrafters.

PP: So why the name change?

EP: Well, we don’t just do hot rods and customs, we also do a lot of concours cars and vintage European vehicles. The guy with the hot rod will continue to bring his car here with AutoCrafters in the name. However, some of the concours clients expressed hesitation about bringing their vehicle to a hot rod shop, so we’ve changed it to “AutoCrafters” which includes both groups. It also better describes what we do because our craftsmen don’t just install a fender, they fabricate one if it is not available.

PP: Jellybean has been known for some time for building high quality cars, but it sounds like you are now really going after the cream of the crop. How are you going about doing this?

EP: You know, it comes down to our staff. We’ve been building it and building it for quite a few years now, bringing in what we feel are the best people available in the industry. We’ve even gone as far as England and New Zealand to find the best talent. All are full hardcore car guys, and we even have a car girl.

PP: With bringing in the top level talent, how has that improved the shop?

EP: We can build anything and I mean anything! An engineer on staff gives us unique abilities when designing a component or an entire vehicle. Old fashioned metal bashers make efficient work of shaping body panels, whether it’s a patch panel, a hood or an entire body. Two premier painters make any part created by our talented crew shine while technicians add the performance and reliability. We’ve combined these skills with a mill, lathe, a variety of English wheels, a few planishing hammers and all the coach building tools you need to fabricate a complete vehicle in-house. Then there is the metal sprayer which gives us a distinct advantage in the industry.

PP: A metal sprayer? What type of work do you do with a metal sprayer?

EP: You know, the metal sprayer has been such an incredible tool. We can take parts that are either pitted or broken, spray the metal on them, grind it smooth & paint it or send it to the chromer. One area where it’s become extremely useful is for restoring what once was an unrestorable part such as a vintage emblem or radiator shell for a Duesenberg, for example, or building new parts. We can create our own badging, trim pieces or just about anything we need by simply building a mold and creating the piece. We’ve also used it to stop electrolysis between aluminum and metal. So thanks to this, our other tools and our skilled workers behind them, we can build anything, and we mean every single little piece on the car.

PP: Would that be a project you’d ever think of putting together, building an entire vehicle from scratch?

EP: Absolutely, our shop truck and a few others have been largely hand built, but we look forward to designing, engineering, and fabricating a scratch-built ride. We intend to be at Pebble Beach or go for the Ridler or America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award with a heavily European- and domestic-influenced vehicle that has been scratch-built in our shop. The only ingredient missing is a client with deep enough pockets.

PP: So, there has been a lot happening at Jellybean; you’re obviously going after some high-end clientele?

EP: Don’t get me wrong, we still cater to the small jobs, the guys that come in for an electrical problem or need a touch-up of some sort. The company’s vision has always been to build world-class vehicles yet retain the ability to perform other work. We have morphed a little bit by getting involved in the vintage rally stuff. These cars are high-end restorations, some have a little bit of performance thrown in, but they are not just show cars. These guys go out and drag these very expensive cars through absolutely everything. I’m talking about guys driving a ‘30s-era Bentley through the rain and refusing to put the top up because that’s not what they would have done back in the day. So for us, function is huge; it’s got to do well at the shows, look good and also drive well while holding up to the punishment.

PP: Are you currently working on any of these types of cars?

EP: Yeah, we’re deep into a build on a 1938 BMW 327 Cabriolet. The entire vehicle has been pulled apart and is in the process of getting rebuilt. There’s no body panel that didn’t get attention. We’ve actually fabricated over one-third of the body and massaged the rest. Many mechanical details, right down to the bushings, are built in our machine shop. It is mostly restoration work, but this car will be competing in vintage rally competitions, so particular attention is being given to the way it drives.

Jellybean AutoCrafters wishes to invite all car enthusiasts to its annual open house which includes the Canada Day Car Show & Cruise on July 1. Last year there were upwards of 300 cars and 400 people in attendance.

A friend and I were recently discussing when and why we had become car guys. I had no real reason, since my dad and his circle of friends were not really car guys. I do remember watching the Ed Sullivan Show, mostly so I could watch the Chevrolet and Lincoln-Mercury ads. In any case, I have the car virus, and no cure is wanted. Our discussion also touched on formative car moments, and I shared my top ones.

In high school, at Burnaby Central, we used to watch the cars leave before we went home for lunch. One particular Grade 12 guy named Bob showed up with a red, two-door hardtop, four-speed, fuelie Chevy Bel Air. He pulled out onto the highway in front of the school, and proceeded to smoke the tires for about one hundred feet, without the car even sounding like it was working. Both Bob and that car were the essence of cool to mere Grade 10s.

In 1969, my friend Tom bought a brand new Dart Swinger 340 4-speed. It was dark green metallic, without the bumble bee stripe, had a black bench seat interior and body-coloured steel wheels with dog dish hubcaps. That was one of the nicest sounding small blocks I had ever heard, and it also loved to rev. It reminded me of the Chevy fuelie engines of the early sixties - angry and sudden.

When I was a student at SFU in 1972, I often took the bus. Thus I was waiting in the bus area on a beautiful summer day when a guy in a red split-window Corvette stopped and asked me for directions to a place on Kingsway in Burnaby. I explained how to get there, and added that my home was on the way. He offered me a ride, and I spent the next half hour trying to take it all in. He had bought the car for about three grand, and was going to ship it to Australia, where he was sure it would bring fifteen grand. Fast, 4-speed, low and nimble, I just couldn’t imagine wanting to sell it.

In 1973, a friend of mine in Richmond owned a 1970 LT-1 Corvette. I cleverly parked in his mom’s driveway, so that by the time he arrived back, my car was blocked in by his mom’s car. I was supposed to pick up my wife from her school, so Lorne said, take the Vette. I will never forget the sound of that angry small block, or the crazy acceleration it gave that 1970 Corvette. Running that thing up through the four gears was like a time warp, it was that quick.

Later that year, I got a ride with a guy from work in his Mustang. Little did I know that it was a yellow, black striped, 1969 Boss 302. He decided to give it a good run in first, and my brain couldn’t really process the 6,800 rpm shift to second until it was over. Not much later, I was visiting with a friend of mine on his night shift at a Shell station on Canada Way near Deer Lake. In came a yellow, 1969 Z-28, complete with the Zoom clutch decal in the rear window. I went out to talk to the owner while he filled up, and he offered me a quick ride. As soon as I was belted in, we moved nicely out onto Canada Way (it was about 2 am), then he decided to get on it. Yikes, another 6,800 rpm first-second shift, and a long pull ‘til we slowed down at the top of second. Both of those 302s sounded sweet, and obviously liked to rev, quickly. Colour me stunned!

Fast forward to 1987, when we lived in Port Coquitlam, B.C. Near us was a small garage, run by a gearhead and his younger brother. One Saturday as I was walking to the local store just past the garage, I noticed the back end of a black, 1974 Pantera, with the hatch open. Inside the back, Jake was working on the 351 Cleveland engine. When I inquired, he said he was replacing the valve springs. I asked how long that would take, and if he was then planning to road test it. He said to come back in an hour, and I did. We pulled out of the garage and headed quickly uphill, but after only a half-block he pulled over. He said it felt “soft,” wiggled the gated shifter, laughed and said, “no wonder… it was in third!” In first gear, the Pantera was a rocket. Now I knew what tunnel vision meant.

In 1988, a friend of mine bought a black-on-black T-Bird Turbo coupe. On a particular weekend in the spring of 1989, he was going to the interior of B.C. for a couple of days, so he gave me the keys to the Bird for the weekend. Yes, he had lost his mind. In any case, I took it for a quick trip around my city. After a couple of first and second gear blasts, I actually pulled over, popped the hood and double checked that there were actually only four plug wires. The way it pulled in first and second had made four cylinders seem very unlikely. Nice job Ford!

In 2009, I had the chance to drive a NASCAR Chevy at New Hampshire International Raceway under guidance from the Petty Experience guys. The 358 small block and straight-cut gear four-speed make sounds you cannot believe. It revved to 6,200 rpm with no problem, and moved the car with authority. A great experience, one not to be missed.

There’s my tale. Even now, when I’m behind cars at stop lights on cool nights, my eyes always check for dual exhausts, then for the sporadic back and forth at the exhaust tips indicating a “good” cam. I hope I’m never cured of this virus.
